The countryside (largely unspoiled) boasts, mountains,
lakes and over 300km of beautiful coastal scenery (many sandy
beaches) facing the Black Sea.
With over 200 sunny days per year and high summer temperatures
from May to October - it is often not realized that Bulgaria
is closer to Turkey and Greece than most other European countries
and that the climate is excellent for holidays.
Today, reforms and democratisation keep Bulgaria on a solid
path toward eventual integration into NATO and the EU - with
which it began accession negotiations in 2000. Bulgaria hopes
to be admitted to the European Union in 2007.
Bulgaria has enthusiastically welcomed capitalism, democracy,
foreign investment and tourism. Outside of the cities, in
the countryside life has not changed much and remains peaceful
and unhurried. The last few years has seen a migration of
people away from the countryside and to the cities for work.
However even in the cities Bulgaria has remained a relatively
safe and hassle free destination
Holiday watchdog, the Association of British Tourist Agencies
(ABTA) cites Bulgaria as the fastest growing tourist destination
in Europe. Bulgaria has become Europe’s most popular
new tourist destination and the amount of Brits travelling
to Bulgaria was up 66.3% this year – more than double
the expected numbers.
Thompson Holidays, First Choice and Going Places all said
Bulgaria was in their top most popular package holidays for
2004. They anticipate an even greater surge in Bulgaria's
popularity in the coming years. More than 3.5 million tourists
visited the country in 2003 – an 18 per cent growth
on the previous year. People are attracted by the 220km of
unspoilt coastline with blue flag beaches, an average of 8
hours sunshine per day from May to October and almost 300
sunny days per year. Temperatures average 26°C, that’s
80°F in old measurements. It’s obvious why many
people are turning away from more established resorts like
Spain and Portugal and embracing the beauty of Bulgaria! |
