Sports in Almeria

Golf
Almería is known for its large numbers of courses and clubs. They are as varied as they are unique. Whichever part of the province you head for, you will be tempted to play a few rounds.

Horse riding
Horse riding is deeply rooted in the area as seen in the important role of these animals in folk festivals. This is one of the easiest activities to find. You can choose to ride either on beaches or in the mountains.

Windsurfing
Windsurfers are a common sight as they cut through the waves of many Almerian coves. Probably, the most popular centre can be found at the Ensenada de San Miguel near the town of El Ejido.

Waterskiing
Popular water sports, like skiing and jet ski are found in most of the quiet waters of Almería´s river coast. Climbing, trekking and potholing are carried out mainly in the caves of Almanzora and the Karst in Yesos de Sorbas.

Skiing
Winter sport enthusiasts will probably find the la Ragua Mountain Pass, in Sierra Nevada, the most favourable setting. In this part of Almería visitors can enjoy cross country skiing, with less of the crowds found in other winter sport areas.

Mountain biking
Excellent biking conditions are available in the most unspoilt areas of the province like Sierra Nevada, Filabres, Almanzora, Sierra Cabrera and Sierra María - Los Vélez.

Microlight and paragliding
This is available and the best areas are in eastern Almería. Probably the most popular area of Almería is Los Vélez.

Sailing
A large variety of boats from large to small can be found. These come together at many marinas dotted all along the coast of Almería. Each is a starting point from which to sail the waters of the Mediterranean. The Marinas of Aguadulce and Almerimar are particularly worth a visit.

Diving
The varied sea life, and the unspoilt character of its beaches and natural areas, makes the Cabo de Gata - Níjar and Levante zones perfect areas for skin and scuba diving. Authorisation from the AMA is required for diving in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata - Níjar.

Walking the Nature Trails
Nature walking is ideal in the open spaces of the Almeria province. There are vast number of trails for this pastime. These include GR-7, the European trail that joins Algeciras with Greece, and passes through the La Ragua mountain Pass.

Nature-cultural trails can also be followed, such as the archaeological trail at Los Millares, and the wine route through the most important wineries in the area, as well as short routes through many towns of the province.
