Families who intend to make their home in Spain and want
to integrate their children into the local community usually
opt to enrol children in Spanish state schools. State education
is free and all teaching is in Spanish.
To enrol in a Spanish school you should apply to the principal
governors office and validate your children’s schooling
so far. This can be done before you arrive. Most schools will
accept students on a provisional basis until all the paperwork
is issued. You will need proof of residency in Spain as well
as passport and Spanish bank account details. San Jose, in
San Pedro in the Costa del Sol has an excellent reputation.
Most private schools follow the Spanish curriculum. However,
many offer a choice between the International Baccalaureate
and the Spanish Bachillerato. Lessons are usually in Spanish.
Some schools offer intensive English tuition at primary level.
Many parents with older children consider International Schools.
This is particularly the case if the child is in the middle
of GCSE’s or A-Levels. Subjects are taught in English
with Spanish as a second language. International Schools offer
qualifications recognised by British Universities. Students
are usually prepared for the International Baccalaureate.
A smaller number offer alternative curricula that deal with
British AS and A-Levels. Day schools are the norm but some
offer boarding.
It is possible to find schools that provide a combination
of English and Spanish curricula that enables students to
achieve qualifications for Spain or Britain.
The Costa del Sol has a large selection of bi-lingual schools.
